As expats in Hokkaido, we have had a long and curious road before discovering and settling in Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island. Years of backpacking the world together stoked my love of cultures and creations, and Hokkaido emerged at the top!
After over a decade into my life in Hokkaido, I have a deeper appreciation for what makes Hokkaido so unique. It took me time to understand and appreciate the deeper rhythms of Hokkaido and its people - the dosanko - the "children of Hokkaido". It is the frontier dosanko spirit mixed with the legacy of the indigenous Ainu people, along with the traditional Japanese shokunin culture - an adherence to one art on the path to "perfection" - which allows Hokkaido's grassroots small businesses to truly shine. Hokkaido's shokunin produce some of the highest quality food, crafts, natural medicines, health & beauty products and artistic designs in all of Japan.
