Kumiki 3D wooden puzzles: hands-on, collaborative and stylish. Your family and friends will be drawn into tinkering with this simple puzzle by fitting pieces together to create wooden “stars”.
Gently slide and nestle the smooth wooden pieces to build each star, with a little extra help provided in the picture instructions. The wood slats are made from all-natural 100% Hokkaido wood.
Kumiki - meaning “to join wood together” - is a practice that dates back to the 19th century when such puzzles were used to teach apprentice craftsmen the traditional skill of non-metal construction. As you work to solve the puzzles, you are simultaneously connecting with generations of woodworkers who made Asahikawa the center of design and craftsmanship in Hokkaido.
The puzzles are composed of 12 pieces in light-colored oak or the darker walnut. The pieces are coated in baby-safe urethane resin to protect from damage, and are easily cleaned with a damp, then dry, cloth.

Sasaki Kogei is a family-owned wood workshop based in Asahikawa, in the heart of Hokkaido, who use Japan-sourced wood to create natural, personal and household products with the view of wood as a “gift from the forest” and a limited resource. Founder Kunio Sasaki first worked in Asahikawa’s established furniture industry, where he learned to make craft presents for friends from the scraps of unwanted timber. His love for woodwork blossomed from then. For over 30 years the company has upheld a mission of striving to create unique, design-centered products in an eco-friendly way. As in Sasaki-san's youth, even sawdust from the factory floor has value when recycled as fuel. Craftspeople at Sasaki Kogei work with wood's natural colors to create designs reflecting the natural world of Hokkaido, the animals and plants of the countryside around their home.
