These unique, custom-made Name Plates carved with your family name, a loving message or perhaps a nickname is a craft to be proudly displayed indoors or outdoors for years to come.
The Name Plates are carved out of Japanese Pagoda wood or the paler-colored Hokkaido Yew wood, utilizing traditional Ainu carving methods at a family workshop in the remote region of Eastern Hokkaido.
Each Name Plate will be hand-engraved onto wood using the rare Ukibori technique, where letters are carefully carved so they appear to stand out from the surface of the wood. The Ukibori technique is traditionally used for lucky items, while the cute Ural owls and Blakiston's fish owls (with ear "tufts") are friendly & protective deities in indigenous Ainu culture.
Please note that each Name Plate takes about 10 days to make in meticulous craftmanship.

Kurita Mingei Ten is located in Kawayu Onsen, Eastern Hokkaido, and is a long-standing family folk-art workshop, where for more than 50 years artisans have preserved generations of Ainu wood carving skills to create a range of household and decorative items. Through utilizing locally-sourced woods - particularly Japanese Pagoda and Hokkaido Yew which have traditional cultural values of good fortune, protection and strength - the craftspeople at Kurita Mingei Ten skillfully create wreaths, name plates, cups and many more household items. Some items are decorated with images of Hokkaido owls that have important protective roles in traditional Ainu beliefs. Each item is uniquely crafted through the techniques of hand-carving one piece of wood, as well as customized by carving requested names or message (by request) using the increasingly rare ukibori technique that makes lettering appear to stand out from the wood.
