About the Product
Spin yourself a little happiness with these 100% natural wood spinning tops, hand crafted by artisans in Asahikawa, the heart of traditional wood crafting in Hokkaido.
With their varied colors and grains, these smooth-to-the-touch tops are called koma in Japanese. They are hand-spun and made primarily from local wood offcuts of the yew, oak and silver birch Hokkaido tree varieties, bringing to life wood that may have otherwise been discarded.
Each top is uniquely crafted to highlight the wood’s natural beauty in the eyes of the artist. The sets of 5 tops - available as Set A, Set B & Set C - have been selected with variety of designs and appearances in mind. They are great fun for young hands to perfect their spinning skills and coordination, and also make good companions on a work desk to inspire more tranquil and creative states of mind.

About the producer
Mokkougei Sasahara is a small Asahikawa woodcraft factory established over 40 years ago. Drawing from his experience working at a well-known local furniture company, founder Takeichi Sasahara’s opened his factory at an early age to carve his own place in the city's woodcraft scene. Initially, he began by crafting handles and knobs, perfecting how to work hardwoods into smooth shapes. Eventually, his name grew as he became recognized in local industry award competitions for his refined woodworking abilities. When he started turning wood offcuts into spinning tops, customers continually challenged him to craft ever more intricate designs. While running the company, Mr. Sasahara created over 100 different designs, maintaining that his spinning tops must be able to spin well and aesthetically pleasing. He noted: “Trees are a limited resource, so I think it is important to not only make the best use of trees, but also to treat them carefully, without wasting them.” Mr. Sasahara recently entered retirement and handed over company operations to his successor, Mr. Shiga. |
